Transition Issues

Sooner or later, parents of special education students will ask, "What happens after school?" The answer to career and life skills training for special education students is, of course, a highly individual one. Many special education students go on to higher education and promising careers. In some cases, however, careful planning will be necessary to assure that the child's physical, emotional, and financial needs are met as he or she moves into adulthood.

The ERIC digests listed below provide additional information on planning strategies for several types of special education students. This is a process that, whenever possible, should involve the student as well as his or her parents.
