Brian Thorton offers a series of study questions for review or discussion of Katherine Paterson’s emotional story of friendship. Here’s a well organized PDF reading guide by Glencoe. The lessons are grouped in four chapter reading segments, each group of chapters is divided into three parts: Before You Read, Active Reading, and Responding. The guides are well thought out and will prompt students to write, create cluster diagrams, and complete comparison charts for the story’s characters, plot, and climax. After completing the novel, students are asked to read five extension assignments in various other forms of literature and relate them to the book’s central themes. Teachers will be able to use this guide as a ‘turn key’ approach to teaching this thoughtful novel.

Site includes an annotated booklist, frequently asked questions, audio of songs from stage productions of some of her books and links to Amazon.com to purchase titles. Although she is a well-loved and respected author, this site is a bit disappointing – lacking lessons, activities, or other enhancements.

Mary Jewel designs a lesson for SCORE that explores the issues and experiences of factory life and immigration, and the rights of workers and women. There are 5 activities to prompt students to research the internet and learn about life in 1840’s New England, and the final activity asks students to create a Hyper Studio game using the collected knowledge. Teachers will find this unit easy to use with the 8th Grade California Content Standards and the rubics for assessment and grading.
